Mal Shi

Our Most Requested Breed

(Maltese - Shih Tzu)

The Mal-Shi is a cross between a Maltese and a Shih Tzu. It is also known by Shih-tese, Shihtese, Mal-shih and Malti Tzu. The Mal Shi is an intelligent, loyal, playful breed that requires moderate exercise and mental stimulation. Though quite independent, they are very eager to please and easily trained. They do well with older children, small animals, and with those of whom they are accustomed.

The Mal Shi is typically playful, alert, agile and highly perceptive dog that thrives on attention and mental stimulation. They're not overly vocal and often fearful of strangers, making them a poor candidate for watchdog. Their desire to learn and eagerness to obey make them a fine choice for first time dog owners. Click out our exclusive Maltese and Shih Tzu profiles, and combine the two. That equals the magical Mal Shi!

As with all designer breeds appearance, size and temperaments vary based on many factors. Our Mal Shi puppies derive from our AKC registered Maltese sire and Shih Tzu dams. Most puppies mature at around 9 to 12 pounds and stand about 9 to 12 inches tall at the withers. Most owners keep the coat short (aka puppy cut) by trimming or shaving three or more times per year. If the coat is worn long a daily brushing using the topknot/center part technique like that of the Shih Tzu or Maltese is recommended.

The Mal Shih is by far our most requested designer breed and we typically have but one litter per year. If hoping to adopt a MODOG Mal Shi, we urge you to complete our Puppy Application now and then contact us for details regarding our “call” and “waiting” list procedures.

Studies show that first generation mix breed dogs often live longer, healthier, happier lives than many purebred dogs. Successful cross breeding requires experience, research and a good understanding of genetics and hereditary tendencies. Breeding half breeds to mix breeds, or mating dogs of conflicting temperament, structure or size can be disastrous. Please research all sellers and be careful selecting your designer breed.

*UPDATE: Our complete Mal Shih description was recently published at www,PuppyFind.com as the official Mal Shi breed profile. We also created a Mal Shi page for the MODOG Blog that includes our breed profile, shopping tips, photos, videos and more!

Selecting the appropriate breed is often more important than choosing which puppy. It’s always best to refer to the AKC to obtain a general idea of the breeds structure, temperament and care requirements before selecting your breed. We also have some very reliable “pick of the litter” methods on our shopping tips page.

Secondly, you should try to speak with someone that actually owns the breed as a pet, rather than just the folks trying to sell you one. Also keep in mind, how they were initially cared for and later trained greatly determines how they look and behave now.

MODOG breed descriptions are based solely on our personal interpretation of, and experience with, these particular breeds. These are not official standards and may or may not accurately reflect the general characteristics of this breed.
